GIS Data

GIS data sets specific to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, coastal California, and its marine environment are provided for educational use. Data sets are provided in a zipped Arcview Shapefile (.SHP) format and are in decimal degrees unless otherwise noted. Data sets are intended to complement those provided in the Mapping an Ocean Sanctuary materials. Links to outside sources of GIS data are provided from the External Links menu.

 

Note: Please be aware some data sets are large and make take considerable time to download on slower Internet connections.

  • Biological Data  ( 14 items )
    Biological data sets include whale sightings, kelp coverages, invertebrate densities, fish sightings, and more. Chlorophyll (ocean color) data are also included as a measure of phytoplankton concentrations.
  • Cultural Data  ( 7 items )
    Cultural data pertains to human uses of the ocean and coastal regions. Data sets include US census data, political boundaries, shipwrecks, dive sites, and more.
  • Mapping an Ocean Sanctuary Updates  ( 8 items )
    Mapping an Ocean Sanctuary, a set of six GIS-based lessons exploring the biological, physical, cultural, and historical aspects of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, was published in 2002 by the Center for Image Processing in Education. Updated data sets are provided.
