(12)
Founded as a nonprofit organization in 1992, CIPE promotes computer-aided visualization as a tool for inquiry-based learning. In support of that mission, it develops instructional materials and conducts workshops that use digital image analysis and geographic information systems technologies as platforms for teaching about science, mathematics, and technology. Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS)
(4)
Designated in 1980, CINMS is a 1,252-square-nautical-mile portion of the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of California. The sanctuary’s primary goal is to protect the natural and cultural resources contained within its boundaries. The sanctuary is an area of national significance because of its exceptional natural beauty and its resources, which include extensive kelp forests and an abundance of marine life such as blue whales, northern elephant seals, California brown pelicans, gray whales, pacific harbor seals, and many other species. CINMS encompasses the waters that surround Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Islands, extending from mean high tide to 6 nautical miles offshore around each of the 5 islands. CINMS has been an integral partner on the project. CINMS Staff -- Laura Francis, Julie Bursek, Ben Waltenberger, and Natalie Senyk -- have taught about ocean science and the use of IT tools such as GIS and remotely operated vehicles in sanctuary management. The sanctuary has also used its research vessel—R/V Shearwater—to transport project participants to the Channel Islands. While on board the R/V Shearwater the teacher-participants engaged in research projects and used equipment provided by CINMS.
